HISTORY OF NIGERIAN BLACKBELT INSTITUTIONS

1975   The traditional Korean martial arts of Taekwondo Jidokwan was introduced in Nigeria, beginning in Lagos, at the Basketball of the National Stadium, by a visiting Frenchman, named Aikpa Aime, from neighbouring West African country Ivory Coast.

1977  Aime organized first-ever Dan Grading Test held at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Staium, Surulere, Lagos, attended by notable martial arts masters and combat sports veterans in the country. Aime promoted only three of his pioneer students, namely Dominic Bassey, Kofi Anani, Emmanuel Ikpeme to 1st Dan who were issued Federal Licence of Blackbelt, respectively. The grading received national publication in the flagship Daily Times of Nigeria newspaper.

1978   Following  final exit of Master Aikpa Aime from Nigeria in late 1977, his bosom friend, Sensei Jack Mbom, pioneer father of Shotokan Karate in Nigeria, who was also official Lecturer at the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Lagos, took over and fostered further grassroots development of Taekwondo academically across the nation.

Subsequently, Federal Blackbelt College (FBBC) was conceived, deriving its name from the original Grading Licence issued. PURPOSE: To protect the Nigeria Taekwondo Foundation legacies including preservation and promotion of the Dan-Grading tradition, ascendancy,, original history and records for the benefit of future generations represented internationally and across 36 States & Abuja.

1984   Federal government adopted Taekwondo as national sport by National Sports Commission.

1986  Following a split between the pioneers, Nigeria Taekwondo Blackbelt College (NTBBC) was born in March, to form a merger between existing factions Nigeria National Taekwondo Association (NNTA) and Nigeria United Taekwondo Association (NUTA). The merger led to the birth of the national body, the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, recognized by National Sports Commission (NSC), affiliated to the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) in 1987 courtesy of Grandmaster Moo Cheon Kim, pioneer national coach.

1995  FBBC legalized its existence, becoming a subsidiary operating as an organ of the NTF75, registered trade-name of the Nigeria Taekwondo Foundation 1975, registered by Corporate Affairs Commission under Companies and Allied Matters Act 1990. NTF75 is recognized by Oriental Martial Arts College and is affiliated to the New International Jidokwan Federation, USA, among other notable institutions

4.      DAX DEOLA KUMAPAYI & ASSOCIATE MASTERS who pioneered Chung Do Kwan Taekwondo in the nation cir. 1977 produced numerous Blackbelts including Sunday Igbinedion, Charity Igbinedion, Charles Ajayi, Vincent Makanjuola at both University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife), Osun State and University of Ibadan in Oyo State.

Credit goes to GM Moo Cheon Kim for the official standardization of WTF competition sparring style and facilitating Kukkiwon Dan Certification in Nigeria and for bequeathing a legacy of spirit of championship excellence. In 1987, GM Kim led the country to win overall medal position and trophy for best  fighting spirit including 3 gold, 1 silver and  from 4th All African Games held in Kenya, before his final exit back to Korea in August 1999.
